Dhaka Days

I am travelling again. I arrived in Dhaka the capital city of Bangladesh on Sunday and right off the bat, I realized that simply travelling around the city was going to be a major adventure in itself. Upon picking us up, the limo driver advised us not to go into the city as there was a major strike happening and that it was "risky". The concierge at the counter said the same, that protesters were battling police near the prime minister's office and that there were reports of several bombs going off in the city.

We finally left for our appointment after hours of waiting for a taxi. Let me just say that if you think you may have seen the reckless driving in Bangkok, Manila or anywhere else in South East Asia, you have not experienced the roller coaster ride that is commuting in Dhaka. Almost all private cars in Dhaka come equipped with roll bars, as the chances of an accident with a trishaw, a three wheeled "tut tut" is unbelievably high.

We left for dinner later that night and discovered almost immediately there was a city blackout. Quite surreal. We would be walking along a brightly lit road and suddenly we would be plunged into darkness and another part of the town would light up.

Today, we had to cancel several early appointments as the city experienced one of the worst floods in recent history. Maybe its not Dhaka. Maybe, I am simply the bearer of luck. Who knows? I will report more on the mobile scene tomorrow, if no further disasters take place. Wish me luck!!
