Firmware Update Successful!
I have managed to upgrade my firmware to version V4.0623.0.41 using the Nokia Software Updater. Everything seems intact and the phone is functioning beautifully. What was critical was that I backed up the phone and synchronized my data to the PC before attempting the upgrade. Also, as a security measure, I removed the memory card in case things went pear shaped.
The process takes about half an hour depending on your Internet bandwidth. Please note that should you decide to update your firmware, your contacts, calender info, images and most of the installed applications will be erased. Back up your data!!
You first have to download the Nokia Software Updater software (15 megabytes) and install it to your PC. After booting the application, and connecting your mobile via the sync cable, it will connect to the Internet and detect which model you are using. It will remind you to back up your phone and ensure that there is a Sim Card inserted in the mobile. Once you agree to go ahead with the update, it will start to download the firmware and install it to your mobile. From this point it is pretty much automated. The firmware file is over 70 megabyte, so be prepared to wait a while. Please note that throughout the process you are warned NOT TO UNPLUG the phone or it may permanently damage the mobile.
Once the phone has rebooted and you have input the necessary info, key in *#0000# to check the firmware version. The following message should appear:-
V 4.0623.0.41.
26-07-2006
RM-92
Nokia N80 (11)
First thing to do thereafter is to restore the phone data. Next, re-insert your memory card, you will note that the device will try to install your applications, but will be unsuccessful. You will also have to re-install by running your App Manager software. You will see a number files with names like "A66EAC8E.SIS". Open those files and re-install your applications. Not all of them will work so you might have to re-install the entire application.
I kept on getting "Application Corrupt" messages when I tried to install MobiReader, WorldMate and Muzee. I keep all the original .sis files on my memory card so I can re-install whenever necessary and you can do the same. I noticed a couple of applications were pre-installed in the update Catalogs, Nokia-Yahoo Search, Adobe Reader, Anti-Virus software.
As for any changes in the performance, I have not noticed anything out of the ordinary. But it's probably a little too early to tell. Will keep you guys updated over the next couple of days.

UPDATE: Please note that if you are going to attempt the update, BACKUP your memory card AND SYNC your contracts and schedule to Outlook. Some users have faced issues with data loss after the upgrade (please check out this link).

Now if only it supported N80s on Orange in the UK!
Tried with both a Vodafone UK N80 and a SIM-free handset - both report "no update available", despite being v3.x firmware.
What type / code is the handset you updated?
My type: RM-92
Code: 0535066
(Both located underneath the battery)
I just tried with my generic N80 V3.0614.0.3 and it said I had the latest firmware. This updater still has a long way to go before it's any use to most people. It's also failed to find updates for my company's generic N70 and 6680.
Sorry to hear that you guys had issues with your update. I have left a comment on All About Symbian, so will inform you as soon as I know more.
FYI, my firmware before the update was
V 3.0617.0.6
03-05-2006
RM 92
Nokia N80 (08)
I am from Malaysia, so am using the Asia Pacific version. Dont know how different it is from the ones you guys are using.
I have N80 with the French software I can also install this version
I just successfully updated 0614 firmware (08 language code; Arabic). No major problems noted. I was able to restore my phone memory backup successfully from the memory card. The only data I seem to have lost is my Bluetooth pairings. I noted much of the same weirdness with application reinstalls, some (like Opera) refusing to reinstall and needing the original SIS file.
David, first of all thanks very much. Second, I live in Shanghai, China and have the exact same phone as yours ;) N80 Asia Pacific. Firmware is 3.0617.0.6 from 03-05-2006, RM-92.
Therefore, why can't I update the same way as you did? "no update available" says the software...
Where did you download NUS from? europe.nokia.com?
Thanks a lot
Hey, i m from india, i was toO UPgraded firmware cooly, the problem that, i lort my y!go application, where again ill get back yahoo!go for my N80.
Any idea welcome
I upgraded mine the hard way ie. via phoenix but I have a couple of questions. Presumably they aren't offering OTA upgrades yet because people don't have the firmware but hopefully they will do so for future updates?
Secondly, does it download the entire firmware module before writing to the phone?
I would much prefer to be able to use this software without needing an internet connection. That is by all means require an internet connection to download the firmware but I don't want to need one to update the phone. So please allow for offline updates.
Hi Guys,
To asnwer your queries -
1) Yes, it is a UK site. You can download the software updater from http://www.nokia.co.uk/nokia/0,1522,,00.html?orig=/softwareupdate
2)The updater does download the firmware first but it auto installs into the N80. So you can't save the firmware elsewhere on your PC.
How it decide which version of firmware installed into N80. I'm using version 11, I'm Malaysian but studying at Russia, If i update at russia, will i get back the Version 11?
Hi, David, I'm running the same version you were running before the update. I'm wondering if it's worth the trouble to update my N80 as well. Have you noticed any changes yet?
Hi, on the whole, i find that the phone is a little more stable now. The wi-fi connection is looking to quite stable, and i have been happily surfing the web for hours on end without the dreaded Memory insufficient message. As for battery life, well i have not done a real test but does not seem to make a real difference. Hope this helps.

Thanks! I think I'll wait a bit longer before I attempt the arduous task of backing up and restoring and reinstalling... it might change my mind if the battery life were improved, but I guess that's pushing my luck. Thanks, though, that helped!
